Hepatitis B is a virus infection of the liver spread by blood and body fluids.
Hepatitis B can be caught from infected people by sexual contact, needle sharing by drug users and by injuries such as bites or sporting type injury. It can also be spread medically through blood transfusion and infected medical procedures. This route of infection has been largely eliminated in the UK but remains a risk in some of the developing world.
Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for people who are at high risk of catching hepatitis B through their work or lifestyle, and for people who are travelling to parts of the world where there is a high prevalence of hepatitis B
